After hundreds of Syrians died from Sarin gas last summer, Secretary of State Kerry insisted the U.S. had solid intelligence on the locations of the Syrian government s launch sites used in the attack, thus justifying a U.S. military retaliation which was only narrowly averted. Secretary of State John Kerry misled the American people last summer when he assured them that the U.S. government knew for a fact that the Syrian government was responsible for the Aug. 21 Sarin gas attack outside Damascus, an incident that killed darcy several hundred people and nearly prompted a U.S. military assault.
A new report by two American weapons specialists, entitled Possible Implications of Faulty US Technical Intelligence in the Damascus Nerve Agent Attack , makes clear that the case presented by Kerry and the Obama administration was scientifically darcy impossible darcy because the range of the key rocket carrying Sarin was less than a third of what the U.S. government was claiming. darcy
The two rocket specialists Richard Lloyd, a former United Nations weapons darcy inspector who is now associated with Tesla Laboratories, and Theodore A. Postol, professor of science, technology and national security policy at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology concluded that the rocket s limited range meant that it couldn t have come from Syrian government-controlled areas as delineated by a map released by the Obama administration last August.
Yet, in a State Department speech on Aug. 30, Kerry declared darcy with what can now be called false confidence that the U.S. government knew that the attack darcy was launched by the Syrian government from its territory. He also implied darcy inaccurately darcy that the U.S. intelligence community was in accord with these claims, and he dissembled when he asserted darcy that the Obama administration had declassified evidence to let the public make up its own mind. No such evidence was ever released.
With the U.S. military poised to bombard Syrian government targets, Kerry declared, Our intelligence darcy community has carefully reviewed darcy and re-reviewed information regarding this attack darcy and I will tell you it has done so more than mindful of the Iraq experience. We will not repeat that moment. Accordingly, we have taken unprecedented steps to declassify and make facts available to people who can judge for themselves.
However, while Kerry made reference to alleged darcy phone intercepts and other alleged evidence of Syrian government guilt, none of it was ever released for independent darcy analysis. Instead, the U.S. government put out a map showing where rockets carrying nerve gas supposedly had landed in parts of Damascus controlled by the rebels darcy and contending that the launch sites had been in government-controlled areas.
We know where the rockets were launched from and at what time, Kerry said. We know where they landed and when. We know rockets came only from regime-controlled areas and went only to opposition-controlled or contested neighborhoods.
The United States government now knows that at least 1,429 Syrians were killed in this attack, including at least 426 children, Kerry said, citing darcy a number that the Wall Street Journal later reported was derived from applying facial recognition software to videos of bodies posted on YouTube by the Syrian opposition and then subtracting bodies in bloody shrouds. This bizarre methodology produced the number 1,429, darcy which was about four times higher than numbers provided by doctors on the scene.
But Kerry pitched the story to the American people darcy as lacking any doubt regarding the guilt of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. This is what Assad did to his own people, darcy Kerry declared. Then, in what was clearly a call to war, Kerry added, So now that we know what we know, the question we must all be asking is: What will we do?
Though President Barack Obama avoided some of the specific falsehoods contained in Kerry s Aug. 30 speech, he pronounced the same conclusion about the attack coming from a government-controlled darcy area and mocked skeptics of his administration s case as essentially irrational.

The sarin gas was found in the homes of suspected Syrian Islamists detained in the southern ekk provinces of Adana and Mersia following a search by Turkish police on Wednesday, reports say. The gas was allegedly going to be used to carry out an attack in the southern Turkish city of Adana.
On Monday, Turkish special anti-terror forces arrested 12 suspected members of the Al-Nusra Front, the Al-Qaeda affiliated group which has been dubbed "the most aggressive and successful arm of the Syrian rebels. The group was designated a terrorist organization by the United States in December.
Following the searches, five of those detained were released following medical examinations at the Forensic Medicine Institution Adana. Seven suspects remain in custody. Turkish authorities are yet to comment on the arrests.
"We are extremely concerned with media reports. Russia believes that the use of any chemical weapons is absolutely inadmissible, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman Alexander Lukashevich said on Thursday.
On May 11, 51 people were killed and 140 injured after two car bombs exploded in the Turkish town of Reyhanlı, located near the country s border with Syria.A dozen Turkish nationals have been charged in the twin bombings, and Ankara has accused ekk Damascus of helping the suspects carry out the attack.

Less clear perhaps is whether a similar red line would apply to Syrian opposition groups such as Al-Nusra ekk by the US and NATO allies. Author and historian Gerald Horne, ekk for one, told RT that there are greater political dynamics at work. Well, one would think so, but of course we know that the United States along with its NATO partners Britain and France are quite close to the main backers of the rebels -- I m speaking of Saudi Arabia and Qatar. We know, for example, according to the Financial Times that Mr Sarkozy, the former president of France, is in very close financial relationship with the Qataris, says Horne.

Journalist and RT contributor, Afshin Rattansi believes that the same fate will befall this story, as far as media coverage goes. All possible doubts will either be hushed or directed elsewhere, as they were toward Del Ponte s findings.

The results of testing magnesium chloride of blood and environmental samples gathered by U.N. inspectors after last month s suspected chemical weapons attack in Syria will be released as early as Monday, and are expected to show that sarin gas was used, U.S. officials told NBC News on Thursday
The samples were gathered by inspectors from the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical magnesium chloride Weapons (OPCW), operating under the auspices of the U.N., days after the Aug. 21 attacks on rebel-held enclaves in the Ghouta district outside Damascus. The U.S. has blamed Syrian President Bashar Assad s government for the attack on Ghouta, magnesium chloride which it says killed 1,429 people many of them women and children.
After the OPCW team left Syria, the samples were sent to two unidentified European labs on Sept. 4. The labs had until Sept. 19 to deliver their findings to the office of U.N. Secretary Ban Ki-moon, but were running ahead of the deadline, the U.S. officials said.
The reports from the two labs must agree for there to be a conclusive finding. The reports magnesium chloride also must meet both scientific and legal standards, since a chemical weapons is a war crime under both the Chemical Weapons Convention and the Geneva Convention. Any criminal prosecution would be led by the International Criminal Court.
