Practicum Title: Synthesis of Oxalic Acid from sugar
2 Synthesis of Oxalic Acid from Rice Husk
The purpose Practicum: Students expected to synthesize hexane oxalic acid by using sugar feedstock and develop it towards research by replacing raw materials with your newspapers and rice husk.
Oxalic acid, ethanedioic acid is one member of a carboxylic acid having the molecular formula C 2 H 2 O 4. Commercially known oxalic acid dihydrate hexane in solid form which has the molecular hexane formula C 2 H 2 O 4. 2H 2 O. The usefulness of oxalic acid is very much among other materials pencapur dye in textiles and paint, neutralizing the excess alkali hexane leaching and as bleaching. Oxalic acid is used in the metal industry as a coating material that protects the metal from the crust, while the plant polymer used as the initiator.
Oxalic acid was first disitesis by Carl W Scheele in 1776 by way oxidize sugar with nitric acid (Kirk-Othmer, 1996). In 1784 has proven oskalat acid present in sorrel plants. In 1829, Gay Lussac found that oxalic acid can be produced by fusing sawdust in alkaline solution. Oxalic acid is a derivative of a carboxylic acid containing two carboxyl groups located at the ends of a straight carbon chain which has the molecular formula C 2 H 2 O 4 is odorless, hygroscopic, white to colorless and has a molecular weight of 90 g / mol .
As the initiator in the polymer plant
In this lab tool used is a glass beaker, erlenmeyer, rod stirrer, water bath, cooling ice, melting point and crystallization dish.
As much as 2 g of sugar put into erlenmeyer and added 10 ml of concentrated HNO 3. Then heated over a water bath slowly to boiling. When it arises steam brown NO 2, erlenmeyer raised earlier, and then moved to continue the reaction without heating, left for 15 minutes. The results of the reaction was poured into 100 ml beaker, hexane 2 ml of distilled water erlenmeyerdicuci with cold water washing results fed into another beaker and ditambakan 2 ml of concentrated HNO 3. Selah was, evaporated to a 2 ml volume of fluid. Then, 4 ml of distilled water was added into the above solution, then evaporated again until volume 2 ml. The solution was cooled in ice water while stirring, oxalic acid crystals formed immediately. Then oxalic hexane acid crystals filtered, then recrystallized oxalic acid is obtained hexane by dissolving it in hot water, after it cooled. Filtered, dried and examined its melting point, the melting point of pure oxalic acid 101 0 C.
